“Greg Howden’s large oils present a beautiful lone female form in an abstract patterned field. The elegant treatment and composition of the clothed or nude figure recalls a century old tradition, reminiscent of an age of past enlightenment, Art Deco, 1920’s pictorialism and sculptural form. However, the modern abstract backdrops in these fine paintings serve to emphasize their innocence by current standards. Furthermore the large scale, and modest poses leave us in no doubt that we are revisiting a sensibility of refinement, care and consideration lost in most contemporary art and culture. Though sensuous, there is but only a modest hint of the risqué which often accompanies figure based art. Yet these works pose their own challenge to the viewer. By the contrast of opposites, as we gaze on these exquisite works, we can't help but feel quite acutely what has been lost and gained in a century of liberalized mores, and romantic realignment.”.........Dr. Manfred Krautschneider

When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.-- i jsut wanted to paste this in here. hope ok.. thanks ...

Dear Greg,

I'm an Art student and am required to submit an assignment on practising Artists. Your site is one of the most impressive I have been able to find. I like your work. Can you tell me how your art developed and why you became interested in the figure? Are there any particular artists that have influenced or inspired you? Any insight that you would care to provide would be really helpful for my research.

Thanks for your time,
Your faithfully,
Kate Barlow

Hi Kate,

I first became interested in the figure when I studied Sculpture. I don't think that I have been influenced by any one particular artist, however one of my favourite artists is Norman Lindsay http://www.dot.net.au/~frankl/NormanSite.html
Also one of my Sculpture Lecturers at RMIT "Ernesto Murgo" was very encouraging. Ernesto now lives in NSW and rang me before Christmas to say hello. I have not heard from him for many years. He knew that I would still be working on my art more than 20 years up the track.

I think that my work or style developed over the years with my interest in Printmaking, Photography, Painting, Sculpture and
Computer graphics. All these art forms relate to one another in a "learning curve which never ceases". Every time I create a new artwork it becomes a new element of research. I endeavour to make the work as visually stimulating as possible. I use what I have learnt from in previous work and experiment with new ideas (I have also learnt from my mistakes: If I make something that does not quite work, then I ask myself why?

My interest in computer graphics has helped me develop a unique approach to colour composition. This is evident in my Oil paintings as well as my digital prints. I am totally fascinated by the human figure. I always start by photographing the model. I find that most of the shots make the figure look awkward and a smaller percentage of shots have the grace and form that I use in my artwork. This is normal and the reason why I take lots of pictures. However as I have become more experienced (and with aid of a turntable for the model) I have found the percentage of successful shots is on the increase. (The learning curve). Sometime in the future I would like to construct a life size figurative bronze. All the Oils-Printmaking-Photography I create are considered to be contributing 2D studies that will help me to design this work over a period of time.

At the moment I am working on some new Oil paintings and I am starting to interrelate the background colours into the figure or visa-versa. Similar to my digital prints) I am using new colour combinations -This is a new development and I am very pleased with the results so far.

I hope this helps with your studies would also be grateful if you would
recommend my Cyberspace gallery to others.

Best wishes,
Greg.

>
> *Do you think that art is valued in society?

Yes, but only by some. How many people do you know with original Artworks in their home (There are many arts and crafts that are inexpensive)-- Perhaps you could try Emailing the national gallery to find out what proportion of the population actually visit a large public (free) gallery.

> *Do you think that you are valued in society as an artist?

Yes, but only by people that are interested or fascinated by the work or the ability to create something they would have difficulty in making themselves.

> *Do you believe there is a place for fine art?

Without question. Look at the past. How you remember an ancient or past culture is reflected in it's artifacts. Many skills of the past have been lost from Hieroglyphics to Frescos to Marble carving to Fine engraving. The patronage set-up was different. Studios of the past often had commercial support from their social environment: The religion or church, the state or the wealthy. The Maestro's would take on apprentices in their studios. High level skills would often last for many generations only to be eventually lost by a changing society.

> *Do you have anything to offer society these days when there is so much visual stimulus available (like TV and radio)?

If you watch a really good film, you might watch it again and again, chances are you will tire of it eventually. A good Painting or Artwork will not be restricted in this way even though it is a static medium, it's appeal should be timeless.

> *Do you think fine artists should work in advertising/media nowadays?

Some Graphic Artists are "fine artists" others can adapt, some choose the more "noble" profession, unfortunately they usually don't get paid as well.

> *Do you assume there is a spiritual role for art anymore?

There always has been and will be for those who wish to make this connection.

> *Does the government seem to value artists and the work of artists
> anymore?

For some time in parts of Europe when you build a commercial building a certain part of the budget must be dedicated to the purchase of Artworks. Policies like this help. Grants are very limited and often go to "name" artist's who need it the least. I seldom agree with grants for individuals but would rather see money being directed to forums such as community galleries so that more original artwork can be seen by the public. Commercial galleries are forced to charge large commissions in order to survive as a business. For most artists, taking their work to a commercial gallery means going on a long waiting list and been told to have at least 25 framed works. Non profit Community Galleries could help to alleviate this problem.

> *Are artists given enough recognition these days?

No. Fine Art Work should be a highly valued asset in any culture. More promotion is required and more resources need to be
directed so that artists can be seen by more of the public. The Internet is a new forum for publication of artwork. For my own part I have published some of my work on the net as a "free Art Gallery" for people to look at and enjoy, however having a web site can be as useful as being in the phone book. The message being if you like what you see and hear then pass it on.
